I am not a vegan…
So what am I doing starting my food blog with three vegan recipes?
I was raised in a conventional meat eating family, but in college I started cooking for myself and discovered how economical, healthy and delicious vegan food can be. I have considered myself a “vegetarian” for over 3 years now, however I do have a degree of flexibility when it comes to animal products. Therefore I do not intend to become a full time vegan or make this an exclusively vegan food site.
Living Green
I own a car and live in Los Angeles, which seems like a major environment crime all it’s own, so it may seem absurd to be writing about “living green.” I do, however try my best to lessen my environmental impact.
For starters, I use my bicycle as my primary form of transportation. Let me repeat that: I primarily bike around the most sprawling city in the US. People think I’m crazy when they find out how much I bike in Los Angeles. Maybe I’m the only one that’s not crazy. Sometimes the traffic here is so bad that it’s actually faster to bike than it is to drive. Whenever I do drive and get caught in traffic, I start to go nuts and long for the freedom offered by my bike.
I love Los Angeles, but I just can’t help and imagine what it would be like if each of the millions of people rode their bike to work just one day a week. The traffic would be reduced, the air would be cleaner and I believe people would be happier.
In a city where car rides and meals laden with cheap animal products are all too common, people start to devalue things. Life becomes less about pleasures and more about refueling our bodies and our vehicles, as quickly and cheaply as possible so we can continue making and spending our money.
I want to share my experiences of trying to live consciously in a city where so many people do differently.
Please enjoy food.
